Obituary

[source unknown]

The death of Benjamin H. Morrow, Captain of the Quantrill Association, occurred at his home west of Buckner, Thursday, January 27, 1915. The Quantrill Association is composed of the surviving members of the Quantrill Band of guerillas and he has been Captain for several years. His death was the result of a paralytic stroke. He was 75 years old.

Mr. Morrow was born in eastern Jackson County Dec. 18, 1840 and spent all his life here as a farmer. At the outbreak of the War of the Rebellion he joined Shelby?s brigade and became a Lieutenant.

Later he joined Quantrill’s Band and served under him three years, taking part in the Battle of Lawrence, Baxter Springs, Rams, Centralia, Lone Jack, Westport and Lexington, Mo. In 1875, he married Miss Amanda Ellen Marsh, who was a native of Warsaw, Kentucky. To this union seven children were born, six of whom survive. They are Mrs. Katie Trabue, Robert Archie Morrow, William B. Morrow, all living in this vicinity, and Miss Jessie, Mary and Emma of the home.

Funeral services for Captain Morrow will be held at one o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the home; burial will be in the Hudspeth Cemetery, near his home. He was a member of the Methodist Church. The Rev. C. T. Wallace will conduct the funeral service.

Ben Morrow went through the Civil War with Jesse James. He identified him when he was shot and killed. He was a pall bearer at the funerals of both Jesse and Frank James.[6]

  6. Articles about the Jesse James' funeral found online do not list Ben as a pallbearer at Jesse's funeral, but at least one about Frank does.
