Benjamin Moore's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 14th June 1761, when he married Elizabeth Fernihough at Flintham in Nottinghamshire. Their marriage record notes that he did not live in the Flintham area, but over sixty miles away at Congleton in Cheshire. Elizabeth was from Flintham, but her late father's family was from Marton, just north of Congleton, which may help to explain how they met. Benjamin and Elizabeth returned to Congleton after their marriage, having twin daughters, Ellen and Ann, baptised at Congleton in 1762. It is not clear what happened to Benjamin, Elizabeth and their daughters after 1762. No further sightings of them in Congleton have been found. However, Benjamin, Elizabeth and their daughter Ellen were all still alive in 1777 when Elizabeth's aunt Ann Walker (her father's sister) wrote her will, which mentions them. |
