Mebane's first step towards becoming an industrial giant took place n 1893, when he married Lilly Connolly Morehead. Morehead was the granddaughter of John Motley Morehead, a former governor of North Carolina and the founder of the Leaksville Cotton Mill. The Moreheads were rich and powerful, but the family legend has it that Mebane met Lily at an auction featuring many items that originally belonged to the family, which had fallen on hard times. Seeing an opportunity to impress the beautiful young woman, Mebane bought all of her possessions that were for sale and promptly gave them back to their original owner. After a brief courtship, they were married. B. Frank Mebane became another leaf on the Morehead family tree, with all the political and economic benefits that came accordingly. After a short time in New York with Lily, Mebane moved to Spray, North Carolina to become the President of the Leaksville Cotton and Woolen Mill Company and the Spray Water Power and Land Company, both of which had just been created by Lily's father, James Turner Morehead

He died on June 15, 1926 after three days of illness in New York City. Mebane was traveling on route to London to meet his wife, who inherited Mebane's entire estate after his death. The estate was then valued in excess of $2,000,000. News of his death received national attention, and was the major news story of the week in the North Carolina piedmont, with headlines such as "His Name is Written Large in Economic History of Rockingham County."
