From "History of Marion County, 1884" pp. 794-5: BENJAMIN T. McPIKE. Mr. McPike was born in Henry County, Kentucky, November 2, 1838, son of James and Mary (Chilton) McPike. His parents came to this county in 1840, and lived for 13 years on the place where they first settled, then moved to the farm now owned by Benjamin T. McPike. He acquired his education in the common schools of the county, chiefly at the old log cabin school house, still standing on his land. He has naturally fine business qualifications, and a habit of careful observation has enabled him to acquire a very practical education. In May, 1861, he joined Col. Richardson's Company of Missouri State Guards, known as the "Lewis County Rangers." In September of the same year he enlisted in Company A, Col. Porter's regiment, and was in the Confederate service to close of the war; surrendered at Shreveport, Louisiana, in June 1865; his battalion being the last one on duty, was relieved by the Federal guard. He was in the battles of Lexington, Pea Ridge, Clear Grove, Helena, Pleasant Hill, Corinth, Jenkins' Ferry and others. He had many narrow escapes, having holes shot through his clothing numerous times, and was knocked down twice, once by a shell and once by a musket ball, which cut eight holes in his blanket. Mr. McPike was married to Miss Mary E. Johnson, who died March 19, 1873, leaving two children: Francis M. and Mary E. She was a daughter of John and Frances (Haley) Johnson. December 21, 1875, Mr. McPike was married to Miss Alice A. Hansbrough, daughter of Richard and Mary E. (White) Hansbrough. To this union two children have been born: Minnie M. and Addie K. Mr. McPike is one of the largest stock dealers in Fabius township. He is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
