Benjamin was the last confederate veteran to die in Louisiana. Accordingto anewspaper article dated 3-15-1936, Ben witnessed the evacuation of Fort Beauregard in Harrisonburg, La. by confederate forces on 9-5-1863 only a short time after his enlistment at Brookhaven Mississippi. The fort is still there today and maintained largely due to Ben's family. In her book about the McGuffee's, Alice Blackman Winegeart tells that when she was little, she would sit on Ben'slap and comb his beard for him. His home is where the Moses Poole brick home is now. Ben lost his right eye due to a nail flying back in his face.
