DEATH: Republican & Leader Saturday, Dec. 10, 1887 Death of Benjamin W. Knight An Old and Esteemed Citizen Passes Quietly Away At five o'clock last-evening, Mr. Benjamin W. Knight died at his home, on South Sixth Street. Mr. Knight had been afflicted with asthma for twelve years, and though his friends had abandoned hopes of his recovery, his death was sudden. On Tuesday morning he was out for a short walk, and he was seemingly no worse than he had been for sometime past, he died peaceably while sitting in his chair. Mr. Knight was sixty-nine years old, and was one of the pioneers of Wisconsin, having come from Wyoming County, New York in 1843. He settled in Waukesha County, where he lived many years, holding various offices of trust and responsibility. He came to La Cross in 1874. For the past twelve years he has been a great sufferer from asthma, but through it all was borne himself with wonderful patience and resignation. He was a great thinker, a man of strict integrity and a consistent member of the Methodist Church. He leaves a widow and three children, two of whom reside in this city, Mrs. H. C. Rathmell and Mrs. W. P. Powers. The funeral services will occur at two o'clock to-morrow (Friday) afternoon from his late residence, 816 South Sixth Street. The friends of the family are invited to attend. BIOGRAPHY: State of Wisconsin Monroe County The State of Wisconsin To all whom it may concern and especially to Benjamin W.
