According to "An Account of John Glover", Benjamin was 22 years of age when he married, and had already been elected to various town (Norton, MA) and county offices, and was Justice of the Peace for the County of Bristol.

According to Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, Benjamin Homes of Norton was a Private, Capt. Isaac Hodges's co., Col. Carpenter's regt.; service from July 27, 1778, to Aug. 13, 1778, 18 days, at Rhode Island; (Volume 8, page 206). In 1780 he appears on a descriptive list of men raised to reinforce the Continental Army for the term of 6 months, agreeable to resolve of June 5, 1780, returned as received of Justin Ely, Commissioner, by Brig. Gen. John Glover, at Springfield, July 9, 1780; age, 20 yrs.; stature, 5 ft. 5 in.; complexion, light; engaged for town of Norton; marched to camp July 9, 1780, under command of Lieut. Jackson, of the artillery; also, list of men raised for the 6 months service and returned by Brig. Gen. Paterson as having passed muster in a return dated Camp Totoway, Oct. 25, 1780,[p.162]. and also appears as Benjamin Homer [p.205] Pay roll for 6 months men raised by the town of Norton for service in the Continental Army during 1780; marched July 4, 1780; discharged Dec. 6, 1780; service, 5 mos. 13 days, including travel (200 miles) home.

also, Capt. Jabez Barney's co., Col. Drury's regt.; enlisted July 23, 1781; marched Aug. 15, 1781; joined regiment at West Point Aug. 28, 1781; discharged Nov. 8, 1781; service, 3 mos. 27 days, at West Point, by order of His Excellency John Hancock; residence, Norton; enlisted for town of Norton; company detached to reinforce Continental Army for 3 months.

    [Note: obviously this account is at odds with the memoir of Benjamin's sister cited below. Apparently Benjamin's father William lived in Norton for awhile to get away from the British in Boston, so this may be more likely. However, there is also an intention of Benjamin "Homes" in Norton in 1783 to Mehitable Hayward, while the marriage to Rachel is Benjamin "Holmes" both in Norton and Stoughton records. A William Homes d. 1858 age 73, so born about 1785, to William and Rachel per his death record. More research is needed.]

    Benjamin had a large family, lived in Berkshire County, Mass., and died in the year 1819, at about fifty-six years of age.
