Ben was born, in Kiev, into a Russian Jewish home. His family arrived in the Port of Baltimore. During WWI and II he became wealthy through the manufacturing of canvas overalls, and uniforms for the war effort. He owned King Card Overall Company in Philadelphia.

Ben married a Christian wife.
