- Benjamin Erastus Gibbs served during the entire war of the Revolution and from 1775 to 1777 was Treasurer of Washington's military household; later he commanded Virginia state troops
- During the war he carried a sword inherited from his father and which he bequeathed to his oldest grandson, and from him it has descended to this branch of the family. It was originally captured by his father at the Battle of Quebec.
