Bezaleel Tracy, a carpenter of Huntington, and one of her worthy and honored citzens, was born in Wayne Co., OH, March 24, 1816. He was the sixth in a family of eight children-six sons and two daughters- born to Bezaleel and Mary (First) Tracy, the former native of Maryland, of English descent, and the latter a native of Fayette CO., PA, of German descent. Our subject spent his boyhood and early youth working upon a farm in his native country. At the age of eighteen he entered upon an apprenticeship with a view to learn the trade of a cabinet maker and carpenter. During the course of his apprenticeship he accompanied his brother to whom he had been apprenticed, to Allegan CO., MI. That was in 1834. At the end of two and one half years he had finished the trade, and in the fall of 1836 he returned to Wayne Co., OH. There he worked at his trade until the year 1843 when he came to this Sate and located upon a tract of land that he had entered in Whitley County, In the spring of 1837. In the meantime, before leaving OH, he was married on the 14th day of December 1841 to Maria Merriman,also a native of Wayne CO., OH, born March 25, 1823. She was the sixth in a family of ten children, three sons and seven daughters, born to Micaiah and Anna (McCoy) Merriman, both natives of PA, the former of English and the later of Scotch descent. On locating in Whitley CO, Mr. Tracy immediately set about clearing a farm out of the woods. To do this, occasioned for him a great deal of hard work. He chopped, grubbed, burned brush, rolled logs, split rails, and, in fact, did all kinds of hard work which the development of a new country necessitates. The course of improvement went on, and in a few years the forest was converted into a good farm. In September, 1860, he and his wife left the scene of their labors and came to Huntington, residents of which they have been every since. Since locating here, Mr. Tracy has devoted his attention to the carpenter's trade. He and wife are both members of the Baptist Church.

The Mysteries of the Fayette Co., PA Tracey/Tracy Families (from the internet).

Kesiah Merryman and Mr Tracy Another line with claims to Fayette Co., PA is Keziah Merryman and Mr. Tracy. Research on this family was done over a century ago by Dr. Elijah Merriman and further research was documented in 1976 by Elsie Howlett Tracy. Keziah Merryman is claimed to been a daughter of William Merryman of Baltimore MD. This Tracey family and related families moved from Fayette Co., PA to Wayne Co., OH between 1810 and 1820 (a date of 1814 is given). Most of the data on this family from the late 1700s to early 1800s is supported by family recollections and lore in the 3rd and later generations. However, there is a considerble amount of circumstantial evidence about this family. One of the main sources of information comes from History of Huntington County, Indiana (Brant & Fuller: Chicago) 1887. In which a biography on Bezaleel Tracy, states that he was "born in Wayne Co., OH, March 24, 1816. He was the sixth in a family of eight children, six sons and two daughters born to Bezaleel and Mary (First) Tracy, the former a native of Maryland, of English descent, and the latter a native of Fayette Co., PA, of Germany descent". Census records help collobrate some of the information and there is apparently a family graveyard at the homestead of Basil Tracy Sr in Wayne Co., OH from which Mr Merriman apparently obtained dates. There is no data on the name of Mr Tracy, except that indications are two of his eldest sons were born in Maryland and probably died in Fayette Co., PA. The family lore states that Keziah/Kesiah was widowed in mid-life and became blind. She apparently lived with her daughter Catharine and son-in-law James Numbers.

Lets take leave and look at the Merryman family. One possiblity for Keziah's father is William Merryman born 11 Apr 1729, the son of William Merryman and Margaret Lane. Listed in the 1790 census of Tyrone Twp., Fayette Co., PA is

Going forward to the 1800 census in Fayette Co., PA we find:

James Tracy with 1 male under 10 1 male 45 and over, 1 female 45 and over in Georges Twp. William Merriman with 2 males under 10, 2 males age 10-15, 2 males age 16-25, 1 male age 26-44, 1 female under 10, 1 female age 16-25, 1 female age 26-44 in Union Twp. Benjamin Merriman with 1 male under age 10, 1 male age 26-44, 3 females under 10, 1 female age 16-25 in Springhill Twp. Also related to the family is Jacob First(Furst) who is listed in the 1800 census in Georges Twp., Jacob First: 2 males under 10, 2 males age 10-15, 1 male age 26-44, 2 females under age 10, 1 female age 10-15 and 1 female age 26-44

Some thoughts on this data, The James Tracey with wife would seem to fit the age of Keziah and her husband (born before 1755), but the only child listed with them is a son under age 10. This James Tracey and wife continue to be listed in Fayette Co in 1810 and 1820 (bother over age 45). The William Merryman listed above would not be old enough for Keziah's father, but could be her brother William. Jacob First named in his will, a daughter Mary Tracy and according to Bezaleel Tracy, Jacob was his grandfather

When we look at the 1810 cenus of Fayette Co., PA there is a rather large number of relevent entries for Tracys, Merrimans, and other related families. As listed abov

The George Tracy in George's Twp., and Bazil Tracy in Springhill Twp., seem to fit the known families of the descendants of Keziah Merriman and Mr Tracy. Elijah Tracy was disucssed above. This leaves a question as to who is the Basil Tracey listed above who was apparetly over 45 (born before 1765). There is Basil Tracey of Baltimore Co., MD who obtained land in Fairfield/Licking Co., OH in 1813. It would seem he is the Basil Tracey in the 1810 census of Brooke Co VA with his son George also being listed in Brooke Co., VA census. This Basil was married to Cloe, and made his mark with a BT He sold various tracts of land in Baltimore County in 1803/1804 timeframe. His children are proved by a deed executed in Licking Co., OH. Rather interesting is that his wife Chloe is thought to possibly be Chloe Merryman b. 28 Feb 1741 to William Merryman and Margaret Lane. That would make Chloe Merryman Tracey, the aunt of Keziah Merryman who married Mr Tracy under the relations hypothezied herein. The other Basil Tracey from Baltimore County MD was married by licensed dated 4 Aug 1781 to Mary Campbell, daughter of James Campbell. This Basil Tracy made his mark with a "R" In his will, James Campbell, who died in 1796, names daughter Mary as wife of Basil Tracey. This Basil and Mary conveyed land to James Campbell in 1797 (presumably her brother). In will of James Campbell, who died in 1796, daughter Mary is listed as wife of Basil Tracey. In 1808, Bazil Tracey, representative of his wife Mary, the deceased daughter of James Campbell, released share of the Campbell estate. Administration Book 13, Page 15, Book 17, Page 317 and 348. There is some uncertainty as to who this Basil is, however it is noted that one of the Witnesses to James Campbell's will was Warnel Tracy. So one possiblity is that Basil (R) was the son of Warnel Tracy of Tego (b. 1 Oct 1702) and Katharine or its possible that Basil is a younger son of Tego and Katharine. It is noted that in the 1801 Baltimore City Directory a Basil Tracy is listed as a wagoneer on Harford Road, and that there are two marriage licenses in Baltimore County for: Basil Tracey to Margaret Jackson 16 May 1815 and Basil Tracey to Elizabeth Smith 12 June 1815. Perhaps Basil (R) remarried and could be the Basil that appears in Fayette Co., PA.

Bazeel and George are the sons of Keziah, Keziah is with her son-in-law James Numbers. It would seem that a number of Bazeel's brother-in-laws were with the families along with Keziah's Merryman kin. The above information and some of the family lore shows that Bazeel was the elder son and George was younger; for some reason Dr. Merriman seems to insist that George was the eldest, but all evidence indicates he was younger than Bazeel and born in PA.

I have no ideas who Mr Tracy Keziah/Kesiah Merryman married is but it seems that Keziah is of the Baltimore Co., Merryman family and son Bazeel was born in 1779 in MD and George born between 1784 and 1794 in PA. The James Tracy found in the 1800 census of Fayette Co., PA seems to be the same peson who also was there in 1810 and 1820 and born by 1855, we would guess that the Mary Tracy age 60-70 there in 1830 was his wife. So that seems to eliminate them from consideration. Else where in PA another possiblity is in Huntingdon Co., PA (which was a popular migration place for Baltimore County families) where there is a Matthew Tracey with 1 male under 10, 2 males age 10 to 16, 1 male over age 45, 2 females under age 10, 1 female age 10-16 and once female age 26-45. There is an Elijah Merryman in Warriorsmark Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA in 1800, with one male over 45 and one female age 26-45. So perhaps the Matthew Tracey is a candidate for Mr Tracy. (there is no Matthew Tracy/Tracey in the 1810 US census.) UNfortunantely there is no 1800 census for Baltimore County, MD. The continued mystery is there any connection to the family of Keziah and the Elijah and Basil Tracey families also found in Fayette Co., PA in 1810.
