The Scherno family in Dabo can all be traced to nearby Wangenbourg. The majority of the first Scherno’s in Dabo are clearly stated in the available records as being children and grandchildren of Jacobi Scherno and Véronique Scheider. The one exception is Barbara or Barbe Scherno.

Barbe is clearly related to the Scherno family. Not only is her maiden name Scherno but the Dabo records show that Barbe is present at Scherno family baptisms and marriages and known children of Jacobi Scherno and Véronique Scheider are present at Barbe’s major life events. Additional to this circumstantial evidence, Barbe’s parents are Jacobi Scherno and Catherina Wister, which raises the question about the Jacobi Scherno who is recorded as her father.

• Is Catherina Wister the first wife of Jacobi Scherno who later married Véronique Scheider? Barbe Scherno was born between April 1731 and March 1732 and the first recorded child of Jacobi and Véronique was born on the 22nd August 1738 and she was named Catherina, possibly in memory of Jacobi’s deceased first wife. Currently no records have been located that can either confirm or deny this possibility.

• Alternatively Jacobi Scherno may have been the namesake of his father. Possibly making him also a child of Jacobi Scherno and Catherina Wister and therefore a brother to Barbe. The argument against this is that there would be approximately 16 years age difference between Jacobi and Barbe. This is not inconceivable and was even normal at this point in history, as evidenced by the eight children of Jacobi and Véronique who were born over a period that is greater than 20 years.

• These options indicate that Jacobi is either the same person, or the son of Jacobi Scherno.
