Barbara Austin Sheldon GREENSTREET Nov. 27, 1958 ~ Feb. 22, 2010 Daughter of the late Austin and Sylvia Sheldon, passed from this life in a way we all should hope for; at home, surrounded in her last few days by all of her family with love, laughter and music. Barbara met the love of her life, Peter Greenstreet, when she was 14 years old, knew a good man when she found him, and married him on September 20, 1980. They went on to raise 3 wonderful children; "the best kids in the known universe!" In addition to her devoted husband, she is survived and deeply missed by her children; Matthew Greenstreet (Sarah) of Bellingham, Adam, and Caroline Greenstreet, of Carnation, WA, a brother, Brian Sheldon (Loretta) of Ferndale, WA, 3 sisters: Kathleen Sheldon (Stephen Tarzynski), of Santa Monica, CA, Jeannie Grippin, (Jim), of Everett, WA., and Carol Schaffer (Eric) of Tucson, AZ., as well as many cherished nieces, nephews and friends. Barbara graduated from Glastonbury High School, Glastonbury, CT in 1975, and received her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College in Boston, MA, in 1979. She received her Master of Arts in Counseling and Special Education from St. Joseph College in West Hartford, CT in 1989. She was in the process of obtaining her Administrative Credential at Seattle Pacific University, when her plans were waylaid by glioblastoma multiforme in October 2008. Barbara decided early on to dedicate her career to early childhood/special education. She expanded that goal later in her career to include teaching and guiding parents as well, a goal she achieved through well received community parent education classes, an online newsletter, and numerous articles published in Northwest Baby and Child, and Big Apple Parent Magazine, among others. She held positions at Children's Services of Sno-Valley (now Encompass), Riverview School District, and most recently at Lake Washington School District as a Special Educator at Emily Dickinson Elementary School in Redmond, WA. She was a longtime active member of Tolt Congregational Church, serving as Sunday school teacher, Superintendent of the Sunday school, newsletter editor and Moderator. Spiritual life was important to her and sustained her in day to day life. In her quiet, thoughtful, caring and wise way, she was guide, teacher and counselor to family, friends and fellow travelers on the path of life. She loved a good turn of phrase and kept those around her laughing, even to the last week of her life, with her inimitable and unfailing sense of humor. During this last episode of herlife, she found comfort in many different places, including contemporary Jewish prayers and music, Buddhist writings, and the writings of the philosopher Henri Amiel, who said "Life is short, and there is little time to gladden the hearts of those who journey with us.....so be quick to love, and make haste to be kind." The Greenstreet family is deeply appreciative for the support and friendship of their Tolt Church, Lake Washington School District, Triumph Aerospace and Duvall Fire Department families over the last 16 months. A celebration of Barbara's life followed by a reception will be held at Emily Dickinson Elementary School, 7040 208th Ave NE, Redmond WA from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 6, 2010. Burial will be at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to "Barbara's Brain Trust", a team of family and friends who have joined for the second year to participate in the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk on Saturday June 26, 2010. The Walk benefits several organizations in the Pacific Northwest with a common goal; to find a cure for brain cancer. Donations maybe made online at www.braincancerwalk.org <http://www.braincancerwalk.org>. Go to the Team List and select "Barbara's Brain Trust", then select "Support Barbara's Brain Trust".
