Austin Charles Conklin was named after a long time friend of his father; Austin E. Lathrop [[1]] who died July 21, 1950 (killed in his mine and known as the richest man in Alaska). Austin E. Lathrop visited Harrisville in 1940 after being away for fifty-eight years.

    "Austin C. Conklin. 87, of 325 Sable, died Sunday (May 6) at Alpena Hospital.
    Mr. Conklin was born March 3, 1892 in Harrisville. On May 5, 1915 he married the former Sylvia L. Miller in Detroit. She preceded him in death Nov. 19, 1964. Mr. Conklin was a former abstracter, who owned Alpena-Alcona Abstract Co. before retiring in 1969 when he sold his business. Mr. Conklin was master of the former Maple Ridge Grange; a member of Hopper Lodge No. 386, FA&M; past TIM of Michigan Council of Thrice Illustrious Masters; a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 341 of Alpena; Elf Khurafeh Shrine, Saginaw Council No. 20 R&SM, Saginaw; Alpena Commandery No. 34 Knights Templar; Cheboygan Chapter No. 109 RAM; Inverness Council No. 60 Royal and Select Masons, Gaylord; and York Rite College No. 16, Saginaw. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth of Alpena and Charles of Ypsilanti; a daughter Margaret, (Mrs. George) Ockstadt of Wyandotte; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Conklin's body is at the Connor Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. today and where a masonic service will be conducted by Hopper Lodge No. 386 Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral is Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, the Rev. Merton Seymour officiating. Internment: Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials: Heart Fund or charily of friend's choice."
