Born September 23, 1860 in East Prussia. His father was Hansjov Borgwardt. (Hansjov may be a transliteration of Hans Johnn or some other name.)
August came to America in 1884 to San Francisco, California.
(he always said “he was a sailor and his ship hit the rocks outside the Golden Gate and he swam in”). His death certificate list his occupation as a seaman.
He worked as a laborer and salesman at White Bros. Lumber Yard in San Francisco.
He married Margareta Welliges in San Francisco in 1888.
They bought a house at 1527 ½ Santa Clara Avenue in Alameda California.
They had five children, three surviving in 1910.
He had a sister living in San Francisco (notes in posession of Cherlyn Curtis)

- Arthur Peter born January 1, 1897 in San Francisco.
August died May 18, 1933 at age 72 years 8 months and 5 days. He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery plot 154 grave 1409 in Oakland, California.
