Chief of the Taumaui tribe, subtribe of the Ngapuhi, for the Mitimiti district, Hokianga. According to Maori and tribal legend, the canoe used for their migration to NZ was the: 'Teingua ote Wakekotoki Matawhaorua.' The Commander was Nukutawhiti, and its last resting place was in Hokianga. They were not one of 'The Great Migration.'

1.   Atama was the Cheif of Te Tao Maui hapu. A sub tribe of Te Rarawa, not Ngapuhi. The Waka (canoe) Matawhaorua was used by Kupe when he discovered Ao Tearoa (New Zealand). This waka returned to Kupe's home where it was given to Nukutawhiti who had it re-adzed to make it lighter and bigger. It was renamed Ngatokimatawhaorua. Atama's main blood line comes from his ancestor Tu Moana who came to New Zealand on the waka Tinana.
