the following contributed by Dr. Anthony Troha, Ph.D.:

The New York Times, Monday, August 29, 1948, Page 57: “BACKUS—Ascan, suddenly on Aug. 27, 1948, son of the late Frederick D. and Alice Jackson, brother of the late Wilhelmina Backus. Funeral services at his late residence, 104-55 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, L. I., on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Interment Maple Grove Cemetery.”

The date of death differs from that on his death certificate and gravestone by one day.

I can find no evidence whatsoever that Ascan or his sister, Wilhelmina, ever married or had any children.
