SIMONDS, Asa, s. Elijah and Abagail, [born] Nov. 7, 1790.
- ↑ There is some uncertainty about the date of his death. At least three records exist in Source:Vermont, United States. Vital Records, 1760-1954, reflecting the existence of a death record plus two gravestones.
This record gives the date 30 May 1861, and appears to be based on the death record recorded in the town books. Access to the images of Peru records are restricted and have not been inspected (an index appears to be item 1 of film 1977600, and the actual book of records item 3). This record gives the date 30 May 1861, naming Old North cememtery in Peru, corresponding to this Find A Grave memorial, and appears to be the original gravestone. This record gives the date 26 May 1861, naming Village cemetery in Peru, corresponding to this Find A Grave memorial, that includes his wife, and so maybe have been erected later. Source:Hemenway, Abby Maria. Vermont Historical Gazetteer, Vol. 1, p. 210 (published 1867), offers the following information, said to be from his daughter, adding a new possible date (28 May 1861): "Asa Simonds ... died at Manchester, May 28, 1861. May 24th Mr. Simonds was about starting for Peru from Manchester depot with a load of flour, when a violent gale arose and he drove under a shed for shelter. The shed was blown down upon him. He was taken from under the ruin, and carried into the depot house, where he died upon the third day from the injury received." In view of both the earliest records (town record and original gravestone) agreeing on 30 May 1861, it is assumed that is the date. The story in the magazine is missing too many details to have confidence in the calculation. (Did they find him the same day as the storm, is the first day the day the storm occurred, the day they found him, or the first day after, e.g., how is May 28th the third day after May 24th?)
