- 1792 - graduated from Yale College
- after graduating from Yale, Chapman taught briefly at the academy of North Salem as well as in Norwalk, CT. He continued teaching while attending the Litchfield Law School.

- 1795 - admitted to the bar
- established a law practice in Newtown, CT

- 1824 - Chapman moved his family to New Haven, CT and briefly opened a law school which he had to abandon for health reasons.
