Arvid Stanley Smedsrud was born on January 21, 1928, at home in Eagle Lake Township, rural Battle Lake, the son of Severt and Sophie (Larson) Smedsrud. He was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Lutheran Church and attended Country School District #285 in Tordenskjold Township. Arvid and Portia Harris were married on July 18, 1964, in Bethel Lutheran Church. After their marriage they farmed and had five children, Angie, Steve, John, Kathy and Jim. Arvid farmed on the home farm where he first dairy farmed, then raised beef, hogs, chickens and in 1978, returned to dairy farming, along with doing a lot of custom combining. Arvid was a people person who enjoyed socializing with friends and neighbors, playing cards, fishing, deer hunting and he liked collecting hats. He was a lifetime member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. Arvid was survived by five children, Angie Smedsrud of Milton,ND., Steve (Tracy) Smedsrud of Underwood, John Smedsrud, Kathy (Dusty) Evenson, and Jim Smedsrud all of Fergus Falls; twelve grandchildren, Kellie, Charlie, Danielle, Jessie, William, Deborah, Elizabeth, Gabriel, Tabatha, Natasha, Samantha and Broc Arvid; two sisters, Verna Braud and Ruby Vogel both of Battle Lake; one brother, Milton (Bea) Smedsrud of Battle Lake and by numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Orva Ann and brothers-in-law, Bernie Vogel and Ruben Braud. Funeral Service: 2 pm, Monday, January 5, 2009 at Bethel Lutheran Church, rural Battle Lake Visitation: Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Ashby and one hour prior to the service at the church.
