Family legend says that Artimisa Corbit was a Cherokee and that's why her family migrated from Alabama to Arkansas (following the Trail of Tears.) In any case, they moved slightly north to the southern tip of Illinois to farm and raise their family.

The story goes that Wilson Godwin was an orphan, and was adopted by the wealthy Alfred Oaks or Oakes. For Wilson's wedding to Artimisa, the couple was given some property and several slaves. At the start of the Civil War, they freed their slaves and Wilson went to fight for Illinois in the Union Army. He was captured and spent some time in a Confederate prison, and inaccurately reported as going AWOL. He was lucky enough to survive and return to his family after serving in the army.
