After Bill's death, his father spoke to a fellow soldier who told Arnold that Bill was an excellent pilot and had special heat seeking devices on his plane. Bill was on a reconnaissance mission with five other planes that left that day. Many times he was told these planes returned from their mission's with 50 caliper holes shot in the planes. Bill's plane flew into and was buried into the ground at the side of a mountain. This fellow soldier speculates that the plane was shot causing the crash, however, this was never proven. Today nobody knows what caused Bill's plane to come down.[1]
