He was a lieutenant in Rogers' Corps of Rangers in 1757 to 1759 and one of the first grantees of Starkstown (now Dunbarton) NH. Archibald Stark and Hugh Sterling were granted 2,000 acres of land in the present town of Conway, NH by Gov. Benning Wentworth Oct 31, 1765, in recognition of their valiant services as officers in the French and Indians Wars. He was a member of Capt. John Moore's Co. at the battle of Bunker Hill, and later held commission as lieutenant and captain for the Americans. Promoted to Lieutenant 5 July 1780, and assigned to 1st Regiment by general orders dated 1 Nov 1780. In 1790, he lived in Dunbarton, NH per the census. In 1800, he lived in Hillsborough, NH. He settled in Hopkinton NH, where he died. He was brother to General John Stark.
