Research Notes

This person is created via reference to his daughter's maiden name and his (presumed) widow's listing on the 1860 census as Hannah Campbell, living with her daughter Mary Synnott in Georgetown, Maine. There are numerous Campbells in the area; however, I haven't yet found any earlier citations to a Campbell family with Hannah as a spouse.

Options:

  1. Hannah had a different first name that she is noted by in other records (Anna, Ann, Johanna...)
  2. This Campbell family wasn't from the immediate area (Georgetown, Bath).
  3. This Campbell family isn't related to the well-documented Alexander Drummond/Campbell family group.

Clues

  • I suspect Mary G Synnott's middle name is Gertrude, based on the continued use of Gertrude as a name in the next generations.
  • Mary Synnott's son Edward is named for his father, who died in 1850. Is Stephen named after someone on Mary's side of the family?
  • Mary's other daughter was Jane M; was Jane named after someone on the Campbell's side?
  • Hannah E (Elizabeth - she is known later as "Lizzie") Synnott would appear to be named after her grandmother Hannah. Could Hannah also be a "Hannah Elizabeth," and might she be listed in the 1850 census as Elizabeth or Lizzie?

John Gray Campbell - is this the right man? A review of the Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine (vol 4), pp 2164-2165, indicates that the Archibald who was a son of John Gray Campbell resided in Bath for only a few years (after 1872), and had a different wife and children. It is possible that this book is incorrect, and the John Gray Campbell descendants are indeed entrenched in Georgetown, or it is possible that the Georgetown Historical Society researcher has latched onto the wrong progenitor of this Campbell family line.

Archibald Campbell and Hannah Cromwell A review of Edgecomb vital records (thank you, FamilySearch, for releasing the original images!) shows Archibald Campbell and Hannah Cromwell (no residence noted for either) were married by Daniel Hibbard in 1810 (p.278) No exact date is given, but they are published on July 1, 1809 (p 242). This supports the family statement that Mary Campbell, Hannah's daughter, was born "in Boothbay or thereabouts" (i.e. further east than Georgetown) before moving to Georgetown and marrying Edward Synnott. I'm pretty certain I've finally broken through the brick wall this family has been! There are no family records for Archibald and Hannah Campbell in Edgecomb, so they may have lived elsewhere. --Brenda (kennebec1) 15:54, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
