Research Notes

Who is the father of Archelaus Tanner?

  • Researcher, Charles Ward1, proffers that we may conclude with a degree of certainty, although the "records do not explicitly state he is his father, that JOSEPH TANNER (b. ca 1710) was the father of Archelaus Tanner. The same JOSEPH TANNER is largely absent from Virginia county records and no will has been found for him."

Who is the mother of Archelaus Tanner?

  • cos1776 Note: The Family Bible of Sarah Morton Tanner, his wife, records the following marriage: "Joseph Tanner & Phebe Branch was married June 27th 1729". Archelaus and Sarah would later name one of their sons "Branch". This raises the possibility that the mother of Archelaus Tanner was Phebe Branch. More research needed.

ARCHELAUS TANNER was identified as grandson of Thomas Tanner (c1685-1765) of Amelia County, Virginia in his will recorded in Amelia County, Virginia Will Book 2, page 101. The name of Archelaus father is not cited. Thomas Tanner's three sons -- JOSEPH, NATHANIEL, and JOEL TANNER, are named. Wills exist for the sons, Nathaniel Tanner and Joel Tanner. NATHANIEL TANNER's will was recorded in Bedford County, Virginia Will Book 1, page 4235,; dated 15 June 1781; recorded 26 November 1781; names five sons: NATHANIEL, SETH, JOEL, NATHAN, and BENJAMIN TANNER. JOEL TANNER left a will recorded in Nottoway County, Virginia.
