Source:Olson, Raymond L. Ancestry of Elihu B. Gifford (1830-1898) and Catherine Sandow Barrows (1835-1917), p. 196, there are suggestions that he may have been the son of John Shaw, who came to Salem, Mass. in 1627 from a town near Halifax, Yorkshire, England. Nothing has been found to support this suggestion. [The referenced John Shaw is Person:John Shaw (6) whose deeds of gift parceling out his estate do not mention Anthony.]

Source:Crapo, Henry Howland. Certain Comeoverers, p. 292, I have not suceeded in learning much about your forebear Anthony Shaw. I am not even certain that he was a comeoverer [sic] since the date and place of his birth are unknown to me. He probably came from Ovenden, Yorkshire. It is altogether probable that he was a comeverer... [There is an article in Source:NEHGR, p. 49:64, giving the birth of several Shaws in Halifax, including an Anthony of Ovenden who was of the right age to be a grandfather of this Anthony. Presumably similar reasoning is the genesis of the comment on Ovenden.]
