Annie Elizabeth Smallridge was born on 17th March 1888 at South Brent in Devon, daughter of an agricultural labourer named George Smallridge and his wife Annie Putt. Annie Elizabeth's birth certificate gives her name as 'Elizabeth Ann', but in all the censuses and on her marriage she was simply called 'Annie', and when she died her name was given as 'Annie Elizabeth'.

Annie appears in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses living with her parents and siblings at South Brent. Her mother died in 1910, and she appears in the 1911 census living with her widowed father and her siblings, and was described as housekeeper and working at home. This perhaps suggests that as eldest daughter she took over the domestic duties of running the household.

Annie was married on 3rd February 1921, aged 32, at Plymouth Register Office to a soldier named William Richard May. He was a widower, whose first wife had died two years earlier. William's brother Harry had already married two of Annie's sisters - first Blanche who had died in 1919, then Lily. There is one child born in 1924 with surname May and mother's maiden name Smallridge, but the birth certificate needs to be obtained to see whether she was William and Annie's daughter or Harry and Lily's.

William died on 17th December 1960, aged 69. At the time of his death they were living at 6 Prospect Place, Wellington Square, South Brent. Annie outlived him by over sixteen years and died in 1977, aged 89.
