Annie Brinsdon (86) the granddaughter of early settler Edward Rutty Brinsdon, has personal memories of her families dairy days. `Hard work and cold weather` are her first words when being asked to recall her time on the farm.
The youngest from a family of four boys and three girls, she said it wasn’t uncommon to see snow drifting over the hedges in winter, meaning milk from the farm had to be delivered to houses on horse drawn sledges.
Her education started at Mornington School, reached after nearly an hour longjourney in a horse and gig, driven by her older sister. In later years, youngAnnie attended a school closer to home in Wakari.
When Miss Brinsdon’s niece, Dorothy Copland ( now 64) was a girl, buses were taking Brockville farmers children to school-= but only if they went to a state school. Dorothy`s catholicfamily sent her to St. Mary`s school, in Kaikorai Valley and she was meant to find her own way there and back. But Miss Copland remembers flouting the law and sneaking on the bus for a ride up and down the hill with the state school kids.
