Joel Sweet was preaching at Mount Sterling, Bropwn County, Illinois and here Edward Delos Sweet met his wife Mary Ann Pope and they were married on Aug 25, 1846. Mary Ann Pope was born in Shelbyville, Shelby Co. Kentucky on ____1826? and moved to Mount Sterling, Brown So., in 1836 with her parents , Reuben and Ann Pope, where on May 27, 1837 Reuben Pope purchased at a Sheriff's sale the 160 acre farm described as the N.E. Quarter Section 22 Township Number 1, South and Range 4 West, Brown County, Illinois. It is located a mile or two south of Route 24 running between Mount Sterling and Timewell, Ill. near what used to be the little counry town of Fargo on the side road to Buckhorn; the farm in 1952 was owned by Kermit M. Kerr. Reuben Pope paid only $75.00 for the entire 160 acres. At this writing very little detailed information has been found as to the Reuben Pope Family. When they were born and where; when they died and where; and where they are buried. Mrs Edward Delos Sweet (Mary Ann Pope) used to say they were related to the Daniel Boone Family but just what this relationship was is not known nor the name of her mother's family. From deeds in the County Office at Mount Sterling, Brown County, Illinois was found reference to the following persons conveying an interest in the 160 acre farm above referred to, evidently after the death of Reuben Pope: Jan 29, 1859 Nancy Pope Hymer and Edison Hymer May 16, 1859 Martha J. Pope Sweet and Alanson L. Sweet; June 14, Hugh A. Pope; June 14, 1866 Sarah A. Pope Spates and Samuel Spates; June 20, 1866 Ann Pope, wife of Reuben Pope (who signed with her "Mark" July 2, 1866 Mary Ann Pope Sweet and Edward Delos Sweet May 5, 1860 Harriet Pope who died on or about Oct 23, 1855 and her administrator sold her interest; (Named in some of the Deeds) Abraham F. Pope Appaently Reuben Pope died on or before 1859, his wife after June 20, 1866, at which time she signed the deed she was living in Quincy, Illilnois, probably with her daughter Martha J. Pope Sweet who was living there at the time. All evidence points to the fact that Reuben and Ann Pope are buried somewhere in the neighborhood of Mount Sterling, Illinois. Ann Pope must have been quite a character from all recollections of her. One story her grandsons liked to tell was that they learned to smoke by taking her pipe into the house for a live coal and they kept the pipe going while they brought it back to her." . References
