Gender Female
Birth[1] Charleston, South Carolina
Marriage 1846 to Barnard Elliott Bee
Death[1] Charleston, South Carolina

The simplest relationship -- James' sister is Bee's wife, or Bee's sister is James' wife, is only possible through the existence of this Anne Hamilton, but there appears to be no external evidence that such a woman existed. But for purposes of discussion, and because none of the other alternatives yield any known connection, this page remains.

One might also use the term "brother-in-law" if:

  • James' wife had a sibling who married a sibling of Barnard or of Barnard's wife -- but James' wife Elizabeth was an only child (many legal battles arose out of her status as the sole heir of her grandfather).
  • James had a sibling who married a sibling of Barnard.
  • or possibly, if James had a sibling who married a sibling of Barnard's wife
  • or more tangentially, if James had a sibling who married a sibling of one of Barnard's siblings-in-law.

Based on searches of WorldConnect, which allows one to easily scan spouses of children of a given couple:

  • The only mentions of James' siblings are of Hannah and Elizabeth, who both married Samuel Prioleau. Prioleau was a contemporary of James and Bernard. He had a brother, Thomas, who married Mary Hutson Ford. It does not appear that any of her siblings married familiar names.
  • Barnard's siblings mostly do not have listed spouses, except for Jane m. Dr. Benjamin Huger. Huger's brother married Ann Heyward Glover, who would have been James' wife's second cousin once removed (Ann's mother was Elizabeth's grandfather's first cousin). That's rather a stretch.
  • The siblings of Ann Wragg Fayssoux, who seems the better documented of Bernard's wives, did not marry any familiar names - Clement Stevens, parents not known; Peter Foissin son of Elias; Rebecca Irvine from Pennsylvania; and Elizabeth Cripps, daughter of John Splatt Cripps.
