Facts and Events
Smoke Ferree CD - November 2004 From Dave Schubert She was married to Barnabas Riley (son of Barnabas O'Reily) about 1792 in Pennsylvania. More on the Riley line that is not in the family listing - Barnabas (O'Reilley) Riley came into the Lancaster County area after arriving in New York from Ireland (we don't know exactly when or where he came from in Ireland) and while in Lancaster County met and married Anne Marie Ferree. Anne Marie's ancestors included Madame Marie Ferree who obtained a large plot of land from William Penn on which her Huguenot followers settled. There is a wealth of information on Madame Marie Ferree in books about the Huguenot settlers in Pennsylvania. Of course the Huguenots were very anti-Catholic and Barnabas was an Irish Catholic so they did not approve of the marriage. In fact Anne Marie Ferree, daughter of Jacob and Barbara Carpenter Ferree was removed from every family and church record as if she never existed. The ironic part is that she was still faithful to her upbringing and raised some of her children as Catholic and some as Protestant and as far as we can tell from family history records, her family never knew that. Barnabas, according to legend, is buried in the cemetery at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland and Anne Marie is probably buried in Carpenter/Zimmerman Cemetery in Adams County, Pennsylvania. (researched by Luxie Riley Althoff, 671 Marsh Creek Road, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania 17325, althoffl@@mail.cvn.net) She died at the home of her son Michael Riley. References
