Facts and Events
Name Anna Duer
Gender Female
Birth? Abt 1723 , , NJ/CT?
Marriage Abt 1748 , Sussex, NJto Benjamin Hull
Death? 1798 , Sussex, NJ

!BIRTH: Warbasse History by James P. Warbasse, 1954 gives Anna a birth date of 1723 & death date of 1798. She married 1748, Benjamin Hull & had 13 children. Suggests she came from CT with her family of sister, Eleanor, bro. William, & parents. They lived near Gustin's, next door to Hulls in Sussex Co. Her family removed to Ohio. Was religious, built a church later sold to Joseph Predmore for a barn. This author considered her a relative of Col. William Duer. < Duer Family of Bucks Co., PA by L. D. Cook indicates that the family bible of immigrant, Thomas Dure, lists the marriage of his son, Thomas as of 25 Dec 1729. The wife's name is not given. If as it is believed but not proven as of 1987 that Anna Duer was the daughter of son, Thomas her birth date of 1723 seems erroneous. This Thomas married Mary Hollinshead who was born in 1712. It seems unlikely that Thomas & Mary had a child when Mary was but 11 yrs old and 6 years before Thomas' marriage. Anna's first child was born abt 1752 which if you accept a birth date of about 1730 for Anna would make Anna in her early twenties when she started having her 13 children. Greetings NJSussex Researchers,

Frost aplenty in the ole county today - it'll be a bit nippy walking the Sussex County cemeteries from now til Spring <grin> For a limited time, until the end of November, I will do lookups for the Baleville Church Cemetery in Baleville (Hampton Township). The Baleville church is multi-denominational, the cemetery small but well kept. It's where I finally found my gggf, Reuben Kinney, after nine years Please request lookups directly from me (not the list) at: vdpcom@warwick.net

Also, I transcribed this from Stickney's "Old Sussex County Families" recently, thought I'd post it here in case someone could use it:

Charles Stickney's book, "Old Sussex County Families" reprint 1988 by Virginia Alleman Brown, pg5-6

" Of the family of Benjamin Hull and Anna his wife, whose daughter Phebe married Joseph Warbasse as above stated, it is believed the progenitor was a Hugenot (or a Frenchman) who very early left his native land and settled in South Jersey about 1640. Here he died. His widow, an English lady, came to Sussex with her son, Benjamin, above named. She died at his residence in Baleville, NJ (under modern-day Hampton Twsp - cdp) The other son is not known. He first settled near Newton, NJ, and became the owner of one of the Bale tracts or farms at what is now Baleville, NJ, and also owner of the Shotwell farm at Augusta, NJ. He married Anna Duer, and they reared thirteen children, all of whome reared families. He was buried in the Shotwell burying ground on his farm. In his later days, he was described by his granddaughter, Mrs. Wood, as of large statue, dignified appearance, somewhat round shouldered or bent by age, with his hair arranged in a long queue that hung down his back, his bright eyes beaming with good nature. His wife was a delicate, fragile looking woman of great Christian worth. Her sister married Daniel Predmore, at one time County judge. Their (Benjamin and Anna) children were: Charity, born March 10, 1752, married Samuel Jones of Newton; Nancy, born April 25, 1753, married Peter Ball of Swartswood; Sarah, born Oct. 21, 1754, married John Kays of Augusta; Mary, born March 6, 1756, married Moses Morris of Newton; Rhoda, born Nov. 24, 1758, married Martin Ryerson of Newton; Elizabeth, born Oct. 20, 1759, married William A. Ryerson of Newton; Martha, born Aug. 1, 1760, married John Youngs of Newton; Ruth, born Aug., 19, 1763, married Rev. Caleb Hopkins of Newton; John, born March 20, 1765, married Margaret Lantz of Newton; Benjamin, born April 30, 1767, married Elizabeth Case of Newton; Phebe, married Joseph Warbasse as before stated; William, born July 17,1771, married Hannah Marr of Pennsylvania; and Dorcas, born April 4, 1772, marriedHenry Price.

Of these children John removed in 1798 to Shapanack in Walpack, where he lived near the Col. John Rosencrans farm. He is sopposed to have been murdered. One of his sons, Com. John H., removed to PA. Another son, Benjamin, born March 17, 1788, married Catherine, daughter of Philip Smith of Walpack. Of their children, Philip removed to PA, Mary married James Bunnell; William; Elizabeth, married Daniel B. Ellenberger; John, who removed to PA; Moses; Emma, who married Joseph E. VanNess of PA; Jane, who married Richard Lantz; David R., who married Juliana, daughter of David Thompson, and is now (1920's) a merchant in Newton, and Martin, who is a prominent citizen of Walpack. Their father, Benjamin, died April 10, 1864, their mother in 1848. He was a member of the Legislature one term, and held other offices of honor and trust."

I'm glad to keep offering lookups from time to time and enjoy helping. But please understand this is a busy time of year - if your request is just too far out of region or too broad, I'll have to ignore it.

Happy Hunting, Cathy
