From a document from Helen McLean in 2000: "Children of Michael McLean and Maria McNenly: Eugene (Gene) McLean, 1879 - 195_; Married Anna _____, from Iowa. Anna h ad been adopted out to a rich family. Anna's mother had a sister in Brec hin and they would come to visit her in Brechin. From "The McLeans", p. 14 Hugh was a regular at the pub in Brechin. A short little Irishman was al so a regular. One day Hugh and this Irishman started discussing their roo ts in Ireland. The little man said, "I knew your kinfolk well back in Irel and. They were mostly all hung." This little man had a big bossy wife. Hug h's future sister-in-law, Anna, was from Iowa. She often visited an au nt in Brechin with her mother. Anna had married the little Irishman as wel l. One day in Iowa, Anna ran into the little Irishman from Brechin. She ask ed him what he was doing in Iowa. Apparently, he had left his wife. He to ld her, "I was sick and tired of serving under a petticoat government." About 1910 Anna married Hugh's younger brother, Eugene (Gene). Anna w as an orphan in Iowa. Her adoptive mother was from Brechin and used to vis it her sister there often. It was on one of these visits that she marri ed Eugene. References
