Ann Spearman appears to have been born around 1810 in Devon, although she gave conflicting answers as to where exactly she was born, saying Yealmpton in the 1851 census and Okehampton in 1861, which are over 30 miles apart and separated by Dartmoor. She also claimed to be the daughter of a farmer named John Spearman. No baptism has yet been found for Ann to confirm her origins.

Her first confirmed sighting is in 1838, when she was married at St Budeaux to an agricultural labourer named John Harry, who was from Saltash in Cornwall, on the opposite bank of the River Tamar from St Budeaux. They settled in the nearby town of Devonport, where they had at least two children. In 1841 they were living at Brunswick Place, and in 1851 they were at 59 Tavistock Street.

John died in 1853, aged 41. Ann survived him by 16 years, appearing in the 1861 census still living on Tavistock Street with her son John Spearman Harry, who was working in naval dockyard at Devonport, and daughter Mary Ann Harry, who was a dressmaker.

Ann died on 18th July 1869 at 2 Tavistock Street. She was said to be 59 years old. She was buried a week later at Stoke Damerel, which was the parish church for Devonport. She left a will, for which her son John and daughter Mary acted as executors. John was described as a gentleman of Morice Town, near Devonport, which appears to be quite a change from the dockyard labourer he had been eight years earlier. Mary Ann had married a Walter Porter and moved to Birmingham, some 200 miles away.
