Lewin |
This baptism has been linked to the Ann Sayers who married Alfred Snelling on the basis that it is in the parish that the adult Ann gave as her birthplace and at about the right time. One of the witnesses to Ann and Alfred's marriage was a Thomas Sayers, and the Ann baptised in 1813 had both a father and older brother called Thomas. (Her older brother is more likely to be the witness, as he marked rather than signed, as Ann's brother did when he married at Ifield in 1836, whereas Ann's father had signed his own marriage record.) It is worth noting that there was another Ann Sayers baptised at Crawley in 1817, who was the daughter of a different Thomas Sayers, who was married to a Mary - that Ann however fits better with the Ann daughter of Thomas who married Richard Best at Crawley in 1840, judging by the ages that Ann Best gave in the later censuses.

The St George Hanover Square Registration District included three sub-districts: Hanover Square, Mayfair and Belgrave. The 1861 census returns for the Belgrave sub-district are apparently lost, and that is the area where this family is known to have lived both before and after that census. This is therefore the most likely explanation as to why they have not been found in this census.
