Anje (Anna) Hoving de Vries was a small woman with brown hair. She had six years of education before marrying Gerrit de Vries on May 20, 1875 in Huwelijk, Groningen, Netherlands. Although a very small woman, measuring only five feet one inch tall, she bore 14 children, including three in a row who were stillborn. Around 1891, the family emigrated to the United States. Anna and Gerrit went back to Holland to visit in 1905. On August 3, 1907, Anna was killed by a train near her house while walking the tracks. She was hard of hearing and it is believed that she did not hear the train coming. Anna was a good Christian woman and enjoyed reading. If she had not been hit by the train, she probably would have lived a long life, as she came from a long-lived family.

Her father was Jannes Tiemens Hoving, a farmer who stood about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing about 165 lbs. Jannes died in the Netherlands on August 1, 1907, he was about 60 years old. Her mother was Grietje Hindriks Wierenga. Anje had one brother, Peter Hoving who had 4 children.
