[edit] About Andy StylianouAndrew "Andy" Styliano was born 2 December 1922 in Tarrytown, New York, son of Christos "Christ" Styliano (b. abt. 1892-1983) and his wife Mary Charles (b. abt. 1901). Andy's father was in the restaurant business, however Andy had no particilar interest in the food business as a young man. He studied Electrical Engineering for a year at Brooklyn Polytech after graduating from high school in 1939. He also worked as an apprentice tool and die maker before he enlisted in the United States Army in 1941. During his Army career in World War II, he served three years in the South Pacific, and was awarded the Purple Heart Award before being discharged in 1945.After the war, Andy worked for his father in his restaurant for a year before considering what he wanted to do with his life. Afterwards, he decided to invest in a resort business in Alaska, but when he reached Seattle, Washington, the weather was so miserable, he decided the cold weather was not to his liking and after a while landed in Los Angeles where the climate more suited him. In the summer of 1947, he was living in a hotel in Los Angeles and during an interview at an employment agency, it was suggested that he look into the food business. Andy's first job in the food industry in 1947, was with Rath Packing Company, starting off washing pork bellies and where he worked in various capacities for 17 years. He worked his way up from several positions in the manufacturing side until he got the opportunity to move over to sales, where he was given his own territory in 1950. In May 1964, he joined Union Packing Company, in charge of manufacturing and sales of the sausage division. Union was acquired by Luer Packing in 1972 and Styliano remained there until 1974 before returning to Rath as its Sales Manager.During his food industry career career, Andy was among the founders of a local Southern California food-industry trade association, the Dairy/Deli/Bakery Council (DDBC), an organization that still exists today in 2014. Andy joined the Deli Council in 1963, just a few years after its founding in 1960, and was an instrumental member in guiding the organization during its early years. George Hobbs, an early Deli Council charter member got him to work on the Dinner Dance and Golf Committees and Andy joined the organization in 1964. He also was one of the stars of the Deli Council musical production of "Guys and Dolls" and was elected to the Board of Directors and appointed the council's Treasurer in 1966. Andy was first recognized by the Deli Council in June 1966 when he received its "Big Cheese" Award, when he was still working at Rath Packing, and again later was recognized for his leadership in the Deli industry, when we became the twelfth person to be awarded with the Deli Council's "Hall of Fame" Award in 1990. Andy Styliano passed away 15 May 1990 in Los Angeles County, California. He was survived by his wife Ruth. His contributions to the food industry are many and is remembered fondly by his co-workers, friends and family. Image Gallery
