Andrew Steele married Jane Lindsay in Mercerberg, PA in 1752. Jane Lindsay was the sister of James and Joseph Lindsay. She was also Andrew's first cousin. Either Andrew's mother was a Lindsay, or his father's sister married a Lindsay.

Andrew was educated at the University of Dublin. It was his father's intention the Andrew join the ministry of the Presbyterian church. Instead, Andrew came to America. His younger brother Thomas Steele came to America later, in 1787/8.

He first settled near Mercerberg, PA. I believe (conjecture loosely based on research, namely "Genealogies of Kentucky Families", Vol. II., "Steele Genealogy") Andrew's uncle Richard Steele had already immigrated to PA, Richard was married to Rebecca Makemie (she and her son Richard Jr. and daus. Jane and Mary moved to KY in 1779, after Richard Sr.'s death in PA). Andrew married in Mercerburg, PA, and then moved to Kentucky (in 1776), and bought lots of land near Lexington in 1783.

Capt. Andrew W. Steele served at battles of Blue Licks and at Bryan's Station in KY. The Battle of Blue Licks was on 19 Aug 1782. It was ten months after Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, and considered by many to be the "last battle of the Revolution". It was fought between 182 Kentuckians led by Col. John Todd who unfortunately lost his life in this fight. Second in command was Lt. Col. Daniel Boone, who was injured. Lt. Col. Stephen Trigg was also killed. Many of the men in this company were of the Morgan and Wilson families. The battle was fought against about 240 Indians and Canadians, led by Brit. Capt. William Caldwell. DAR#'s 40346 and 47835
