Notes for Andrew Knight Nuckols:

War of 1812 74 REG'T (TRUEHEART'S) VIRGINIA MILITIA. History of Ross Co, OH - Capt. Zachary Taylor, a nephew of the famous old general, served in the war of 1812, and lived to old age, a resident of Paint township. Other prominent early settlers were Joseph Ogle, M. Benner (the first shoemaker in the township), Jesse Cox, Adam Kerr, Timothy and Daniel Mixon, Andrew Knuckles, Mr. Weller (father of Frederick Weller), 1810 Ross Co, Paint, OH pg48

Notes for Jane Ramsey: Jane Ramsey is the child of Samuel Ramsey and Elizabeth Lyle of Galax VA., Email from Ramsey researcher 7/13/2007 kraftcohen@@rcn.com Marhsall Cohen The transcription of the tombstone on the internet is wrong. It says age 24. A RAOGK volunteer drove to the cemetery on 7/14/2007 and her husband dug up the buried end of the stone to find her age was 74 years which in fact fits with the history of the Lyle family research. It indicates she was probably the first born child of Samuel Ramsey and Elizabeth Lyle. Samuel Ramsey and Elizabeth Lyle were married sometime before 1772 (I have found no record). They had 10 children, the oldest of whom was born in 1772 and the youngest of whom was born in 1799. Jane is the only child for whom I have no birth or death dates. Two of her sisters were married in 1808 and 1809, so that is a likely approximation. Oscar K. Lyle did an important tome in 1912 on the Lyle family in which much information is contained. Many folks have cited this in their family genealogies on Rootsweb. Many people say that Jane married an Andrew Knuckles at some point. Lyle says that Samuel Ramsey had purchased land in Highland County, Ohio, and that he planned to move there. He had sold his Virginia farm and promptly died. His widow and all of his children but two, moved on to Ohio.

Presbyterian Church records show that Jane and Andrew moved to Saunton, Virginia in 1808, Lexington Presbyterian Church Records (Contributed by Patti Wood, Palo Alto, CA.)

If Lyle is correct, the couple probably moved on to southern Ohio. Margaret Ramsey Adair, one of the two sisters I mentioned above (married in Virginia in 1808) moved with her husband, George Adair, to Ross County, Ohio. (1850 Census Ross Co, Paint Ohio, next to child of Andrew Nuckols who married Joseph McCoy) (pg387) Depending on the dates, it is highly likely that the Andrew and Jane that you mention are the ones. On closer examination of the Oscar Lyle book (available on Heritage Quest) it says that Jane Ramsey died at age 80 but lists no birth date. She married Andrew Knuckles, farmer, when she was 50 years old! no issue. She must have gone west with her Adair and Ramsey relatives ca 1813. She must have married the widower late in life. Clearly this was a second marriage Also, my wife's great Aunt Louise Hagan Bolen lived in Galax, Virginia, in an old farm house. The place was supposedly haunted, and when my wife heard noises, she said that it was simply the ghost of "Old Mister Knuckles" who had had a peg leg while he was alive. Galax would have been in Grayson County. (Additionally, the "old Mr. Knuckles" that I alluded to in the ghost story, is an entirely different matter. This tale comes from Louise Hagan, married to a David Bolen. Their farm was outside of Galax, Virginia. I believe that it is in Grayson County, but it is bounded on the east by Carroll County. My wife and her family were staying at the Bolen home and heard unusual noises in the house: the sound of what seemed like a peg leg and pool balls clicking together. In the morning when my wife asked Louise about the noise, she said that it was the ghost of old Mr. Knuckles, an old farmer who like to play pool on their table when he was alive. I know nothing more on this score.

I) History of Ross Co OH Beers 1881 Green Twp The judges ordered an election to be held at the house of John Crouse on the 21st of June, 1803, for the election of three justices of the peace who should each serve for three years.
