Andrew Jackson Norman was born 1827 in Virginia, son of John and Nancy (Montgomery) Norman. When Andrew was a small child, he contracted typhoid fever and frozen sod was pressed to both sides of his head to control the high fever. He survived the fever, but was deaf the rest of his life. He was said to carry a small slate for people to write on when he couldn't understand them. He also taught children with the slate. Many years ago, Escue Norman (a son of Andrew Harrison) met an elderly lady in Weston, WV who told how Andrew J. Norman had made her first shoes. They had no nails.

Andrew Norman married Amanda (Monoka) Arnold, daughter of Isaac and Mary Arnold, on July 18, 1852 in Gilmer County. Andrew and Amanda bought a 21 acre farm on the left fork of White Oak Camp Run near Normantown, WV (where Harold Gaston now lives). On March 9, 1861, they sold 185 acres on Bear Fork to Melville Stump.

In September 1862, Andrew was robbed by 3 men masquerading as Confederate soldiers. On May 14, 1865, Monoka died at the age of 31 years, 4 months and 16 days.
