When their son Matthew was 14 Andreas and Magdelena lost all they owned and went bankrupt. Their son's godfather signed for them to buy a small house which Andreas succeeded in playing for. He was a rail splitter. They were so poor that often they had pumpernickle and kraut three times a day. On October 24, 1868 Andreas and Magdalena and two of their five children (Christiana 18 years old and son Fred 7 years old) come to American. They sold their little home in Germany to pay their fares to America and join their sons Matthew and Matt and daughter, Marie - this from original pass that their son Fred received when he came to America - dated October 24, 1868. Andreas is 58 when they came from Breman to Brooklyn, NY. Later they came to Gridley. They arrived in Brooklyn on 2 Dec 1868 on the Ship Smidt Andreas was 5 foot, 7 inches tall; slim, brown hair and blue eyes. They were Lutherans. References
