According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 genealogy (page 12), Amos Thompson DeWitt I moved to Arkansas from Crawfordsville, Indiana with his parents when he was in his early teens. He remained there for the rest of his life. He attended school in Grand Prarie Arkansas, and was instructed by Professor Graham, of London England. He had a "great and good" influence on Franklin County. He was a school teacher, the Justice of the Peace (he held court in his blacksmith shop), and farmer. There is a poor copy of a land grant, signed by President Franklin Pierce on 9/1/1856, in the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, which grants property to Amos DeWitt in Franklin County, Arkansas. The grant was recorded at the Land Office in Clarksville, Arkansas, and is contained in Volume 50.

According to probate records in the Franklin County Clerk's office (Ozark branch), Amos was appointed guardian of his wife's sister, Nellie P. Hudson, after Herod Hudson died.

Also from the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, "From stories passed down,'Pa Amos' was most demanding of his own children - but by reputation, spoiled the grandchildren; seeing that at meals they were fed first and enjoying all their antics." Word was passed down to Jerry D. Abshier, through some of his DeWitt cousins and second-cousins still living in Franklin County Arkansas in 2001 (Carolyn DeWitt - grandaughter of Mills DeWitt), that son Lee DeWitt did not get along well with his father A.T. (even though Lee later named one of his sons A.T.). The Amos Thompson DeWitt farm grew cherries, apricots, plums, apples, Indian red peaches, and grapes. He suffered with stomach problems for many years and reached the age of 66 years before his death.

Amos Thompson's probate packet was located at the Franklin County Courthouse in Charleston, AR in May 2005 by Jerry D. Abshier. Many of the probate documents (including the "Proof of Will") were signed by David P. and Lee G. King. The Kings were neighbors of the DeWitts, as evidenced by their position on the 1870 and 1880 census sheets immediately after the DeWitt listings. Amos Thompson named wife Sallie and sons Mills and Bob to be the executors of his will. In the probate packet, there was a copy of A.T.'s will and a legal note written by Sallie and Mills stating that they declined to serve as executors, leaving Bob DeWitt as the executor of the estate.

Amos Thompson is interred at the King cemetary at Peter Pender, Franklin County, Arkansas.
