    Amelia "Millie" Yocum was born in 1762 in Botetourt County, Virginia, to Matthais Yocum and his wife, Hannah See. Her mother died when Millie was about sixteen years old and her father was remarried to the Widow Duncan. The Yocum family was one of the first white families in Kentucky when they migrated in 1779. Millie married Gen James Buntin Ray, while he was fighting in the American Revolution, 5 July 1781, in Mercer County, Kentucky. Her sister, Catherine "Caty" Yocum, married his widowed step-father, Col Hugh McGary Sr. James and Millie had two sons: William and Jessee Young Ray. Millie Yocum Ray died, 12 or 21 December 1783, aged 22, in Mercer County, and was buried at the cemetery on the hill above Shawnee Springs in Mercer County, Kentucky
