There's some question as to his parentage. Certificates of Death for Amanda, Essie Ethel, Minnie Bell, Ambrose Denton, Asa Bethel and James Henry have his state of birth as Kentucky. The same documents for William Clarence and Jesse Athen have it as Virginia.

Many, possibly most, have him as a child of Jacob Pence and Mary Tanner but he is most likely a grandchild as Mary Tanner Pence was about 61 years old when he was born. There was a daughter of Jacob and Mary, Sarah, living with him when the 1880 census was taken and she was reported to be an Aunt of the Head of House. Ambrose also states that Sarah was his Aunt in his will. A daughter of Ambrose, Ida Lou Pence Spurrier, claimed his parents were unknown and that he had no siblings.
