In the 1850 census in Maumuee Township, Allen County, Indiana, an Ambrose Ashton is living with his wife, Huldah. This census has Ambrose's DOB as 1813 in Ohio & his age as 37. Either this is incorrect or there was a different Ambrose Ashton who married Huldah Shields in 1845. rc, 02/25/2012
In the 1870 census, Ambrose's household includes his older brother, Jacob, and his half sister, Martha, 18 (Martha's mother was Mary Elizabeth Eveland), in addition to his wife & children. rc
From the written recollections of Ambrose's half sister, Laura Jane Ashton Vail (Mrs. Charles L. Vail): "By his first marriage there were five children: Jacob, Ambrose, William, Frank and Mary...Ambrose married Mary Cumings [Cummins]. He was a farmer. His farm was in Allen County, Indiana, near Maysville [now Harlan]. They had six children, George, Nellie, Lillian, Joseph, Mark and Clark." rc 02/25/2012
