Facts and Events
Scott County Register February 20, 1907 Obituary of Amanda Smith Transcribed by Lynda Harvey Mrs. Amanda Harvey died on the 9th at the home of her son-in-law, J.C. Jones. Her maiden name was Smith, and she was born in Holmes County, Miss., Jan. 5, 1828. Nearly her whole life has been spent about High Hill in the southern portion of this county. Her marriage to Mr. William Harvey was in 1844. Twelve children were given them and of these two daughters and five sons are living. She had just entered on her eightieth year and saw her progeny to the fourth generation, there being one great great grandchild. Her husband died nearly thirty years ago. Her descendants are among the most honorable and useful of our citizens. She had been a member of the Methodist Church from her girlhood days and always maintained a high Christian character. Nearly a year ago she was stricken with paralysis and remained very helpless to the close of life, being tenderly cared for by her affectionate descendants and a host of friends. The funeral services were held at High Hill church and attended by a large congregation. The Baptist minister at Hopewell, which is nearby and his congregation in deference to the occasion called in their service for 11 a.m. and came over and joined in with us in sorrowing tribute to the honored dead.
