Alonzo was a farmer, brick mason and mechanic. He owned and operated a brick factory at Garrett IL before moving to a farm just south of Boyleston IL in Wayne County in 1899. There he raised mules for the army during World War I and grew sunflower seeds. He was the father of 12 children, only four living into adulthood. Most of the other eight died from typhoid fever. Distraught over a failed second marriage after the death of Emma, he died a suicide by hanging.
