- Allen's wife Martha is widowed in the 1880 census in Guilford county, NC, therefore it would appear that Allen died before 1880 and it is reasonable to guess that he is buried there as well. Needs more research.

- p 414 - ABRAHAM PEEPLES & als. vs. ALLEN E. D. TATUM & als. ... The other defendant, [Person:Allen Tatum (1)|A. Tatum]], admits the advancement to him of two slaves after the date of the bond, but he says it was bona fide, as his father was then in possession of real and personal property, sufficient to satisfy all his debts. He states that his brother and himself were the administrators of his father, and that all the assets have been exhausted in paying the debts, and also the lands which descended to the heirs. This defendant does not admit that the plaintiffs have paid the debt, as stated in the bill. ... ----- [cos1776 Note: The 2nd case reports that it was Allen Tatum that received the slaves from his father. This contradicts the first case in which it was reported that it was his brother Dudley that received the slaves. Not sure what to make of this at this time.]

In August 1829, Henry and Allen Tatum and James Nelson became the sureties for Herbert Tatum in a bond given on Herbert’s appointment as guardian of the infant children of James Billingsley. Heavily in debt, Herbert died a short time later, but not before executing a deed of gift for two slaves—Sam and Rachel—to his son Dudley. Following Herbert’s death, the Tatums and James Nelson received a judgment against them for $270 for signing the bond. Now, two of them sue Herbert’s son and others to recoup the money, arguing that the “two slaves are worth much more” than the debt. ----- [cos1776 NOTE: this is just an abstract]
