Alison’s maiden name and origins are unknown. As an adult she indicated that she had been born around 1786 at Norham, which was then in the detached northern part of County Durham, but was later transferred to Northumberland in 1844. Her first confirmed sighting is in 1815, by which time she was married to a mason called Alexander Robson or Robertson.

Between 1815 and 1829 Alison and Alexander had seven children baptised at Norham. Alison also later appeared in the 1851 census with a daughter who indicated that she had been born around 1810 at either Whittingham or Newcastle, but for whom no baptism has been found.

Alexander appears to have died in 1834.

The 1841 census finds Alison living with three of her children and a granddaughter at Norham. Alison was described as a pauper at this time. In 1851 she was living at Norham with three daughters and three granddaughters, and described as a pauper and former house servant.

Sometime between 1851 and 1855 Alison left Norham and moved over sixty miles south to Willington Quay, on the banks of the River Tyne in the parish of Wallsend. Her son Alexander had moved there earlier, appearing there in the 1851 census. Alison died in Willington Quay on 15th December 1855, having been paralysed for eight days. She was probably in her late sixties or early seventies.
