Burial[1] 14 Apr 1834 Norham, Durham, England

Alexander Robson’s origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is in 1815, by which time he was married to a lady called Alison and they were living at Norham in the detached northern part of County Durham, which was later transferred to Northumberland in 1844.

Between 1815 and 1829 Alexander and Alison had seven children baptised at Norham. All the children’s baptisms describe Alexander as being a mason. Alison also later appeared in the 1851 census with a daughter who indicated that she had been born around 1810 at either Whittingham or Newcastle.

Alexander appears to have died in 1834, being buried at Norham on 14th April 1834. Alison survived him by 21 years, appearing in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living at Norham with some of her children.

The Bishop’s Transcripts for Norham have been checked for the period 1828-1842. There is no Alexander Robson or Robertson burial listed in 1828-1831 or 1839-1842. However, there is a gap in the Bishop’s Transcripts covering the period 1832-1838. No transcript has been found online covering this gap, suggesting those indexes and transcripts which do exist were compiled from the Bishop’s Transcripts. Another researcher has found the following two burials which are presumably from the Parish Registers:
    bur. 11 Oct 1833: Alexander Robertson, aged 82 [1750/1]
bur. 14 Apr 1834: Alexander Robertson, no age given
It seems unlikely that Alexander would have been 82 in 1833 given that he was still having children baptised in 1829. It therefore seems most likely that Alexander was the one buried in 1834.
