    Mr. Briggs of London was employed in 1890 to search all available records in order to ascertain the birthplace of the family of the Olmsteds who came to New England in 1632. ... He proceeded to search the Subsidy Rolls. He found that ... James [Olmsted], had married there [the parish of Great Waltham] one Alice (family name not found, but presumably either Hawkyns or Sorrell). The fourth payment of the subsidy (due 3d year Edward VI.) was not collected till the 6th year of Edward VI. (1552-3) and in the return then made "the widowe Holmstede" is found in the parish of Great Waltham "in the place of James," showing plainly that he had died in the interval between 1550 and 1553. It seems to be proved that James and Alice were the parents of the James who lived at Great Leighs, and died in 1595, and grandparents of James, the emigrant. The Sorrells and Hawkynses mentioned in the will of "Als," below, both lived near James in Great Waltham. ...

    [Note: From other references, it is clear that the author considers this to be the will of the mother of James Olmstead who married Jane Bristow.]

    [Note: There would appear to be an error somewhere, as widow Alice is named on the Subsidy Roll of 1552/53 and the author estimates that Alice's son James was born about 1550 - it seems unlikely that he would have been named even as a co-executor at the age of 3. Possibilities include:
    - the dates given in the abstract are incorrect (maybe they should be 1553 or 1583 instead of 1533);
    - the estimated birth year of son James is incorrect (and Jane was not his first wife);
    - this will is from an earlier generation (not the mother of the James who married Jane Bristow).]
